Businesses dependent on trucks and trailers should be aware of CVIP inspections, as they are required in each provincial government to operate commercial vehicles. The CVIP is separate from regular inspections and implemented to ensure driver and vehicle safety. Without it, your vehicles will not be cleared to drive. Getting these inspections done doesn’t have to be a source of stress.

Kingpin Trailers is a CVIP-certified inspection facility; our team is well-equipped with the expertise and knowledge to keep your fleet safe, efficient, and road-compliant. The right preparation and maintenance schedule at a trusted shop will prepare you to pass every year. Continue reading to learn more about inspection basics and how Kingpin Trailers can help you pass inspection every year.

What Is A CVIP Inspection? Who Needs One?

CVIP is the Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program, and each province has different regulations. At Kingpin Trailers, we understand how important safety compliance inspections are to run a successful fleet. We follow the Alberta CVIP manualand ensure that we follow every part of the protocol. When Kingpin repairs your trailer, it leaves our shop certified and road-safe with the corresponding documents and stickers to prove it. The CVIP requirements are mandatory for these vehicles:

  • Trucks, trailers or tractors, over 4,500 kg
  • Commercial fleets and operators (including buses with a capacity of over 10)

If an issue arises during maintenance on your vehicle, we likely have the parts in our fully stocked warehouse. If it isn’t in stock, we can order it the same day with the fastest delivery in Western Canada.

What Does a CVIP Inspection Include?

A CVIP inspector will be looking at everything, including whether your vehicles have all the correct documentation and up-to-date safety equipment. The inspection of the vehicle will include:

  • Brakes and air systems
  • Suspension
  • Lighting and electrical
  • Tires and wheels
  • Body condition and structure
  • Coupling devices and hitches
  • Tailgates, doors and tarps (where applicable)

As an authorized trailer dealer with top-quality parts and products, Kingpin Trailers has extensive experience with dry vans, reefers, flat decks, and more. You can trust that any trailer purchased from Kingpin will be well-maintained.

Common Reasons Vehicles Fail CVIP

Some common issues found during inspections can cause a vehicle to fail. Kingpin mechanics will address and fix these ahead of time, saving you headaches.

Faulty Brakes: Malfunctioning brake components, leaky brake lines, worn brake pads, insufficient brake fluid

Electrical: Faulty wiring, blown fuses, malfunctioning battery connections

Lighting: Broken or malfunctioning tail lights, headlights, brake lights

Tires: Damaged tires, bulges or cuts, tread depths below the legal limit, or uneven tire wear indicate alignment problems

Suspension:  Worn-out suspension components, broken springs, and damaged shock absorbers (suspension issues are quite common for long-haul trucks and trailers)

Fluid System Leaks: Leaks found in fuel lines and tanks pose environmental threats and fire hazards. Oil, coolant, or hydraulic fluid leaks can indicate greater problems with the vehicle’s vital systems, such as the engine or transmission.

Our shop does body work repairs, and we know that’s often where inspections will fail. It’s better to fix any problems as soon as possible.
