Plenty of things need hauling, and they’re often not designed to fit the dimensions of an enclosed trailer. Certain flatbed trailers may not be able to handle certain loads safely, which can make it hard to identify the best solution for your cargo. At Kingpin Trailers, we’re proud to offer reliable solutions from industry leaders like Doonan Specialized Trailers to make efficient hauling simple and straightforward. Let’s take a look at some non-enclosed trailer designs and what they’re designed to carry.
Flatbed Trailers
The most common design on the road is the standard flatbed trailer. These trailers sport a single flat, level deck for cargo. Unenclosed, they can be loaded and unloaded from the top, back, and sides and easily accessed with machinery like cranes and forklifts.
Flatbed trailers are typically used to haul smaller machines, large machine parts, steel beams, lumber, and other construction materials. To keep the cargo safe during the haul, fasteners like heavy tarps and chains can be used to secure it to the trailer bed. Their simple design with minimal points of failure has made them the most popular and versatile trailers in the world.
Drop Deck Trailers
Drop deck trailers, also called step deck trailers, have two decks. The front deck is smaller and higher off the ground, while the rear deck is lower than a typical trailer bed.
This is done to allow trucks to haul items that are normally too tall to meet legal height restrictions. It also typically makes loading and unloading awkward and bulky items easier. You will usually find a drop deck trailer carrying large pieces of manufacturing equipment, taller machines, and large vehicles.
Double Drop Trailers
The lowest profile among common semi-truck trailer models is the double drop or “lowboy” trailer.
Lowboys can have as little as one foot of ground clearance and achieve this by having two drops in the frame—one at the front and one at the back—allowing the deck to sit lower than the wheel axles. Like a more extreme version of the drop deck trailer, this lets them haul even taller and heavier loads, such as excavators, passenger vehicles, massive industrial components, and agricultural machines.
Specialized Trailers
You will sometimes run into flatbeds, drop decks, and double drop trailers that are built for specialized tasks. These include the removable gooseneck or RGN trailer. Because the front of this trailer can be detached, loading vehicles can drive directly onto the bed to place cargo.
Some trailers are also extendible, allowing them to carry lengthier cargo or shorten their bed for easier maneuvering. Several other modifications exist, too, such as tracked beds, beds shaped for holding rounded objects like pipes, and various combinations of 5th wheel, gooseneck, and kingpin setups.
